Temple of the Rock Goddess

The Temple of the Rock Goddess is a solo installation that was born from a simple question: Where are the women of Rock? Jo Gamel explored this question through dozens of portraits of women rock and metal musicians, live interviews, interactive sculptures, and personal correspondence. She, also with the audience, created a Scroll of Divine Creators which was an endless list of names of women musicians. She had vinyl dealers come to the installation who only sold albums with female musicians in the band, as well as books by female rock critics. An interactive timeline called A Century of Rock Goddesses allowed audience members to add events like album releases, cover shoots, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to an ever-expanding chronology of impactful moments. Sculptures of Rock Goddesses held candles that the audience lit and these flames made the glittering mixed-media work sparkle under the rays of black light and neon light. To top it all off, Jo Gamel performed as the Priestess of the Temple of the Rock Goddess and in a ceremonial robe, she recited poetry she wrote about how each of the women in the portraits demonstrated the power to overcome challenges and reach their most celestial dreams.

Through this installation, this Temple of the Rock Goddess, the community came together to teach and learn from each other, growing together and discovering new role models as they chase their own happiness.
